Photography Website SEO requires a different set of work than that of SEO for text heavy websites, as to be expected. Our client Benjamin Garrett is a talented Austin, Texas-based Wedding and Lifestyle photographer; he hired us to execute a complete site redesign with the ultimate goal of emphasizing his lengthy photo portfolio while maintaining SEO.

After completing a new and improved Benjamin Garrett Photography logo and website, we were inspired to share some Photography Website SEO tips that we utilized along the way.

1. Identify Keywords

It’s absolutely crucial to identify and select the right keywords for SEO purposes. You can get an idea of the right keywords to use by using Goggle AdWords, or by researching competitors’ websites and expanding the list. Once you have a set of keywords, enter those into Keyword Tool to find additional suggestions. This will help you to find variations that you may not have thought of initially. It’s very unlikely to rank high right away for competitive keywords so it’s also good to utilize a few less competitive keywords, such as local keywords.

2. Set Image Alt Tags

Make sure to set the alt tags of all of your images to your chosen keywords; this exponentially helps photography website SEO. Make sure to change them up and alternate as much as possible.

3. Name Photo Files

Further on the note of keywords, it’s extremely important to name files with your chosen keywords prior to uploading them to the website. For Example: Take an image titled “DSC-003.jpg” and rename it to something like “bride-groom-austin-wedding-2014.jpg”. It’s absolutely possible for an image to become a top ranked image in Google Image search which can drive significant traffic to your site.

4. Build External Links to Your Site

Link Building is exponentially beneficial. You need search engine “spiders” to see your determined keywords from multiple sources, in association with your site. Encourage past clients, industry blogs and other local websites to link to your site. Make sure to register yourself with Local SEO companies and to create your social profiles on websites like Yelp, The Knot, Flicker, Pinterest, Faebook, Twitter and Yellow Pages. Asking clients to review your company on Yelp, Google+, Yellow Pages, Better Business Bureau and other industry specific platforms such as The Knot or Houzz can go a long way to establishing your company and building trust with potential clients. Take a look at Lion’s Share Yelp page for an example of this.
